The Gironde is the largest estuary in Europe. It is on its shores that the Port of Vitrezay offers a space devoted to nature, and obviously belongs to the “Nature Escapes” network which enhances these sensitive natural sites of Charente-Maritime. It is also a departure point for cruises to admire the estuary from the inside.
An exceptional natural site
Port Vitrezay is an ideal place for walking or cycling. It is a window from the south of the Charente Maritime to the Atlantic Ocean. Thanks to the power of the Gironde estuary, many aquatic species can be found in the fresh water mixed with the salt water of the sea. ; Sailing times are governed by the tides.
Vitrezay is located on the V80: canal des 2 mers à Vélo. It is therefore a must for lovers of cycling on a quiet site and in the great outdoors. Bike rental is available on site to travel the 16 km of marked trails
Many other events and activities dedicated to the observation of fauna and flora are regularly scheduled there: fishing, outings to explore the marshes, carriage rides, cruises on the Gironde estuary from the end of April to the end of October. ..
Vitrezay is also a place of passage for migrating birds. Many species stop over or set up their nests there. The star of these marshes is the stork whose flight and noise are recognizable! Walks supervised by “BioSphère Environnement” animators allow you to discover the habitats and typical species of estuarine marshes. It is also the occasion to observe the birds of the marshes such as the Spring Wagtail, the Cisticola of the rushes, the Shepherd’s worm or the Corn Bunting which build their nests on the ground.
Cruises on the Gironde estuary
All the cruises offered from the port of Vitrezay are an opportunity to discover the natural and traditional riches of the Gironde estuary. Indeed, the largest in Europe offers to meet unique landscapes and flavors: Talmont sur Gironde in the north, the great vineyards of Bordeaux: Médoc on the south shore, Côtes de Blaye in the north or even the impressive citadel of Blaye to name only the most important places.

Each year around 120 cruises – 10 different tours with or without a stopover in Gironde are scheduled from April until October. Some even go to one of the magical islands of the estuary: Patiras or Cussac-Fort Médoc or even to Bordeaux.

Fishing in the “Carrelet” (hut on stilts) and other specialties
The possibility of renting a “carrelet” (fishing hut on stilts) on the Gironde estuary is one of the great originalities of the site. This type of fishing is not just a postcard from the past, it is a true Girondine and Charente tradition, a way of life.
Historically, this activity was that of the poorest because it required few resources… but also brought very uncertain resources. It has found its “letters of nobility” with the construction of pontoons on which cabins are fitted out for more efficient fishing. Over time, the carrelets become a place of relaxation and conviviality between the second home, the palombière and the workers’ garden. During a tide, it is possible to rent a plaice and experience this motionless journey.
Vitrezay is also an ideal fishing area for amateurs and experts alike. With 21 hectare lakes, visitors can learn about traditional fishing (carp, etc.)…
Horse-drawn carriage rides from Vitrezay with Alternative Animale
During the season, Jean-Paul is present with his 12-seater carriage. It shows you the marshes of the Gironde estuary and their specificities in a different way. Among the musts, the “Charrette aux Saveurs”. While crossing the marshes to the rhythm of the horses, you will taste the culinary specialties of the restaurant Le Vitrezay. A feast for the eyes and taste buds !
Or, the Gourmet Walk. It brings together a visit and tasting at the producers, crossing the marshes and discovering the animals that live there. Return at the end of the day for the last rays of sun on the estuary.
