More details

Interest of the circuit:
In the Middle Ages, the lower village of St-Ciers-du-Taillon, has a Romanesque church and a hospice that receives travellers on the road to Santiago de Compostela. Today a calvary marks the site of the old hospital.

Many communes have taken the names of saints and characters from legends. An important pagan and Christian tradition can be seen in the toponymy of the sites.

The commune of Ste-Ramée has many underground refuges. The 12th century church of Saint-Rémi has a rectangular plan and a single nave. The capitals are decorated with chimeras, devils, animals and naked women.
A 1955 painting depicts Saint Remi in a gesture of blessing amidst stylized mountains.

To the north of the village of St-Ciers-du-Taillon, the castle of Orignac corresponds to a seigneury dating back to 1200 with Ythier d'Orignac. It passed to the Cravans and Ferrand families in the 14th century, then to the Le Fourestier family in the 15th century and to the Saint Légier family, who kept the castle until 1919. The latter was rebuilt several times (18th and 19th centuries). The main building, flanked by two pavilions covered with slates and flanked by cylindrical watchtowers covered with a stone cupola, incorporates elements of the old castle. A pavilion was built at the end of the master's house. A vast park surrounds the castle, accessible through a fortified gate.

St-Antoine :
In the 11th century the Antonine order was founded. The name "Antonine" comes from Anthony, patriarch of Upper Egypt and founder of monastic life in the East.
After being sold as ecclesiastical property by the Prince of Condé, the Antonine estate was acquired by Jeanne d'Albret in the 17th century.
In the 19th century, it was transformed into an agricultural estate by a bishop of La Rochelle.
Today, the dwelling of Saint-Antoine houses a private vocational agricultural high school.

Another possible departure is from the Cheval Blanc car park in St-Ciers-du-Taillon.
