In the 11th century the Antonine order was founded. The name "Antonine" comes from Antoine, patriarch of Upper Egypt and founder of monastic life in the East.
After being sold as ecclesiastical property by the Prince of Condé, the Antonine estate was acquired by Jeanne d'Albret in the 17th century.
In the 19th century, it was transformed into an agricultural estate by a bishop of La Rochelle.
Today, the dwelling of Saint-Antoine houses a private vocational agricultural high school.
