Interest of the circuit :
The church of Plassac, in a primitive Romanesque-Byzantine style, is dedicated to the cult of Saint Laurent. The portal is decorated with zigzags, grinning heads, stars and lozenges, typical decorations of the late 11th century.
A native of Huesca, in Aragon, Lawrence was a deacon of Pope Sixtus II. He was martyred in Rome a few days after him, during the persecution of Valerian, on 10 August 258. The delay in his execution was explained afterwards by the fact that Lawrence was treasurer of the Church: the police would have tried to obtain from him the delivery of the goods or archives of the Church. Tradition has it that he was martyred on a grill, which remains legendary.
The castle of Plassac, an 18th century building, was built by the architect Victor Louis. Two monuments existed before the present monument. A 12th century fortified castle is attested by the presence of moats, underground passages and the Pèlerin tower.
Destroyed several times, it was rebuilt in the 18th century.
The Pilgrim's Tower was built before 1772. It was used as a refuge for Christians on their way to Santiago de Compostela.
The commune of Plassac has a 19th century wash house. It is protected by a gable roof and is built of rubble stone and stonework. The basin is surrounded by flat stones, allowing the washerwomen to put their wooden kneepads on it to wash their clothes.
