En détail

This heritage is rarely highlighted, with a guided tour from the church forecourt to Jonzac's No. 1 cemetery.
The discovery of a Merovingian necropolis on the church forecourt and the archaeological dig that took place there have given way to a display on the stone floor. The sarcophagi drawn in this way are illuminated by a blue light at night, taking us back to the men and women of the Middle Ages.

In 1843, in the interests of health, the town bought the land destined for the future No. 1 cemetery (known as the old cemetery).
There are many symbols to be found here; as you stroll around, you will come across a sculpted or metal crown in 'honour' of the deceased, a mason's square and compasses, earthenware with family names, a wedding wreath in a glass case for a dearly departed wife, and all the stone decorations that an architect might have offered to wealthy 'clients', taking care to discreetly affix his signature to the bottom of an ashlar.
In addition to presenting the funerary symbol as an object for reading our history, the tour on Saturday 25 May will also seek to illustrate the 2024 theme of this Printemps des cimetières, "Women in cemeteries".
