En détail

This network comprises 3,800 km of waterways spread around 5 major catchment areas: the Sèvre Niortaise, the Charente and its tributaries, the Seudre, the Gironde and the Dordogne. There are currently 1,500 watercourses and 10 canals, not to mention the freshwater and salt marshes.
The associated hydraulic heritage takes many forms: from simple fountains to complex hydraulic systems (aqueducts, canals, locks, water towers, etc.).
Through a selection of archives, the exhibition invites visitors to discover this varied, natural, built and sometimes intangible hydraulic heritage linked to freshwater, a living treasure to be preserved and maintained. This heritage bears witness to mankind's desire to harness water for food, economic and health needs, and reflects the know-how and technical skills required, and the need for constant improvement and adaptation.
