In the course of the 17th century, the fortress was transformed into a beautiful and highly ornamented stately home. The municipality and the Sub-Prefecture settled there in the 19th century, endeavouring to preserve this stone setting. Let yourself be told the story of this millennium of history during the guided tour of the edifice and visit the museum rooms of the town council, the marriage rooms with paintings of the lords of Jonzac and the Napoleon III theatre.
The castle is part of the "Sur la route des Trésors de Saintonge et d'Aunis" circuit and is listed in the Michelin guide to the 100 most beautiful detours in France. The castle of Jonzac has constantly evolved over the course of its existence to become a place of passage for many personalities who have marked a thousand years of history.
